Can a knight called to serve the king be faithful while being diverted repeatedly by those in need?

"This is a story of an errant knight on a mission to serve his king.  On the way he helps people who are in need.  When he gets there he is very old.  When he gets to the gates three guards think that he is just a big heap of rags, then it starts moving.  He doesn't know if he is going to get into the castle....
