Tao Jones: The Known World Print E-mail
The name Edward Jones is generally associated with free market capitalism (vis-à-vis the Dow Jones Industrial Average of the Stock Market). However, Pulitzer Prize winner Edward P. Jones shows a different form of capitalism, namely slave trade, in his novel set in the 19th century. This work of historical fiction leaves the reader with valuable insights into the dynamics of slavery. The main character, Henry Townsend, himself a former slave, is a black slave holder in rural Virginia. The story highlights portions of the lives of its diverse and divers characters, but the story always weaves back to Henry and his family. After Henry's death, his wife manages the estate and struggles to maintain control of the slaves. Neither platonic nor platitudinous, "The Known World" discloses a fresh look at the problem of slavery and the human condition.
