Help build the beloved community and celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service! It's not a "day off", it's a day on. Organize or participate in fellowships, marches, parades, service projects, and teach-ins. If your school or place of employment does not close for the day (as many in the south still do not), consider writing a letter to the newspaper and your employer and not going to work that day. Click here to see a sample letter and visit these websites for more information about what you can do.
If you live close by, consider participating in these events with the Baptist Peace Fellowship. "The Baptist Peace Fellowship members/chapters of Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, and Tennessee celebrate Dr. King’s birthday every year with a weekend gathering called 'the King Fling.' We focus on some aspect of Dr. King’s message and ways we can get involved for justice and peace today. Last year we held it at FBC, Granville, OH and focused on 'the World House,' a theme of Dr. King’s last year of life. (The essay on the World House forms a chapter of Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community? which was the last book Dr. King published before his death.) This year we are holding the King Fling at Crescent Hill BC in Louisville, KY and focusing on becoming the beloved community. One focus will be using nonviolence to address violent crime—speaker will be Rev. Dr. Joe Phelps, pastor of Highland BC and director of Louisville’s 'No Murders Metro.' Another focus will be community organizing for low cost housing, etc. We also will explore aspects of nonviolent spirituality and have much fun." -Michael Westmoreland-White, January 2006
